Captain Lawrence Captain's Reserve Imperial IPA

Instead of waiting a few months to join me for another review, Jay is back only two weeks later and this time he brought the beer. Captain Lawrence is a fairly small brewery out of Pleasantville, NY (just north of Yonkers), but their beers are still not available up here in Albany yet. Jay picked this beer up when he was downstate for an Oktoberfest beer festival.

Split a 17oz bottle with a friend.

Appearance: very yellow for an IPA. hop haze. Bright white, creamy head. Gorgeous lacing.

Aroma: very Pliny esque. Tons of Citrus and light flower scent. Cologne like.

Taste: definitely fits the bill of an imperial IPA. Extremely citrusy, almost juice like nectar. Very very bitter from start to finish. Body is a tad watery and/or phenolic. No alcohol presence though. A very west coast style ipa from a very east coast brewery.

Mouthfeel: surprisingly thick and a bit of a creamy texture. Not crisp like most beers of the style. Hops linger and dry out the tongue.

Drinkablilty: for such a robust, bitter beer this is surprisingly palatable. Soft body leads to smooth finish

Overall: very impressive for such a small brewery. Near perfect beer. The only caveat: Dryness can get a little annoying after a while which is why I recommend drinking it with a spicy meal.

Grade: 9/10
