Ballast Point Big Eye IPA

This is another beer sent to me from John in North Carolina in a trade. Interestingly, this beer is NOT from the South, but from San Diego! For whatever reason it's not distributed to my state yet. It's nice to get back to the IPA style after taking a break from them for so long.... relatively speaking.

Poured a 12oz bottle into an oversized wine glass.

APPEARANCE: Fairly clear, bright orange color bordering on blood red. Two-finger, eggshell, frothy head. Good retention and lacing.

AROMA: Typical citrus west coast scent, but not quite as potent. Grapefruit and strawberry are noticeable and a "dry flower" note like potpourri.

TASTE: Very robust IPA with strong hop flavor. It’s very bitter across the tongue while it’s in the mouth. Finishes with fruit cocktail of grapefruit, strawberry and slight pineapple sweetness. There’s only a touch of caramel maltiness here, which is fine. Tasty, but not very complex.

MOUTHFEEL: tad thin for fairly big IPA. Hops linger for only a moment and vanish so there’s not an annonying drying effect at all.

DRINKABILITY: Definitely a palatable beer. Not as obnoxiously dry as many west coast IPAs tend to be. Goes down smooth. Doesn’t sit heavy in the stomach.

OVERALL: Very good IPA. Probably could’ve been great had it been a bit more complex. I really dug that strawberry and pineapple sweetness. Also enjoyed the fact it wasn’t like a liquid desert in my mouth either. Definitely recommended!

Grade: 8/10
