Rickard's Dark

Beginning with this episode I'm knocking out ALL the beers in my fridge I've received in trades and donations over the last few months. This beer was sent to me from Fo in Ontario http://youtube.com/WeirdBeer Even though I know Rickard's is just the Molson/Canadian equivalent of Blue Moon, I wanted to try this beer because I already had the Red and the White, so why not complete the trilogy?

Poured a 16oz can into an English nonic pint glass. Received this in a trade with "Fo" from Hamilton, Ontario - thanks!

APPEARANCE: Typical porter complexion: black/blood red. 3-finger, offwhite, foamy head. Does leave minor lacing, but only minor retention too.

AROMA: Next to no smell at all. I get a typical porter aroma, but I also get a generic Molson can beer smell. Neither are potent.

TASTE: One of the most neutral-tasting beers I’ve ever had. It’s not watery or skunky or grainy - it’s kind of a presence in my mouth. As it warms I get more of a generic porter flavor with malty sweetness and a tidbit of maple syrup. If it warms too much it starts to taste like cough medicine. But mostly it’s bland to ok.

MOUTHFEEL: a little thicker than I expected. A little dry in the aftertaste but easily tolerable.

DRINKABILITY: it’s easy to quaff a mild beer. Goes down smooth. 4.8% ABV seems about right.

OVERALL: It tastes and drinks exactly like what it is - a porter in a can made by the second-largest brewery conglomerate in the world. Not a repulsive beer, but not much to like, either.

Grade: 5/10
