Terrapin Gamma Ray

This is a beer that's been in the fridge for a while. It was sent to me from in a trade a few months ago (that's right - months!). That's okay, because it's a 10.8% ABV wheatwine - I'm sure it'll keep for quite a while. Even though Terrapin is not distributed here in New York, I've reviewed A LOT of their beers!

Poured a 12oz bottle sent to me from a friend down south into an oversize wine glass.

APPEARANCE: Bright orange, hazy, white foamy head. Okay retention and lacing. Alcohol legs noticeable.

AROMA: Smells like a regular witbier - noticeable orangepeel and coriander but the alcohol is also quite noticeable.

TASTE: Wasn’t expecting to like this, but was pleasantly surprised. Quite refreshing while cold. Starts off with honey/candy sweetness and finishes with a touch of spice and typical witbier flavors. Alcohol is barely noticeable.

MOUTHFEEL: The first few sips are intense on the tongue. My palate grew used to it quickly. Even when it warmed it was easily tolerable. No drying effect, thankfully.

DRINKABILITY: For such a big beer it definitely does not drink like it. 10.8% ABV - are they sure!? Drinks like something around 6%. Refreshing when cold. Tasty and satisfying as it warms.

OVERALL: A pleasant surprise. I’m tempted to rate it higher because my expectations were a little low, but it didn’t knock my socks off the way an upper echelon beer would. In the end - a damn fine beer.

Grade: 8/10
