Terrapin Coffee Oatmeal Imperial Stout (aka Wake N Bake)

Matt Stewart of joins me via Skype to review a beer closer to his home than mine - Terrapin Coffee Oatmeal Imperial Stout. This beer was sent to me from Mark Sinderson of in a trade we did well over a month ago (thanks again to Mark for the beer!).

   AROMA 8/10   APPEARANCE 3/5   TASTE 7/10   PALATE 3/5   OVERALL 16/20
Chad9976 (624) - Albany, USA - FEB 2, 2011
Got a 12oz bottle from BikeBeerBBQ in a trade (thanks, Mark!). Poured into a tulip glass.

Appearance: Absolute jet black color with minimal dark brown, soapy head. Only a little retention and lacing.

Smell: Lots of roasted coffee - like iced coffee sans cream and sugar. No alcohol or ethanol smell initially, but as it warms it starts to emit those solvent-like fumes.

Taste: Iced coffee from start to finish. Oatmeal imparts a slightly sweet, gummy texture and a cereal-like flavor. Coffee taste and dry bitterness is strong throughout. There is a small presence of bittersweet chocolate in the finish and aftertaste, but it is very mild and doesn’t linger long enough.

Mouthfeel: Surprisingly thin and fizzy like a soda on the verge of going flat. Doesn’t coat the mouth the way a true imperial stout would.

Drinkability: The 8.1% ABV is well-masked in the taste and body for the most part. I can drink it in bigger swigs, but it lends itself to sipping. Dry bitterness from the coffee gets cloying.

Overall an impressive and original brew, but there are better examples of coffee and/or oatmeal stouts available (i.e. Founders Breakfast Stout).

Grade: 7/10
