Three Heads Skunk Black IPA

Kevin from is back and this time he brought the beer. Three Heads is a new brewery out of Rochester, NY who only have four beers in production right now. Kevin has tried their other beers, but saved his tasting of the "Skunk Black IPA" for an episode of Chad'z Beer Reviews. Thanks to Kevin for the beer! (By the way, this review was shot about a week ago. We shot the "FAQ#0" video after we shot this review and before we shot the review you'll see tomorrow).

Appearance: Black body with ruby red highlights. A tan/gray frothy head - excellent retention and lacing.

Smell: light floral hops, some fuesel/solvent-like scents later on. Touch of roasted malt. Otherwise quite mild.

Taste: Wet, lightly sweet porter-like palate up front and through the middle. Backend is dry, bitter hops with noticeable pine. It’s not a sticky palate, though. 75 IBUs catch up with you eventually and make this beer a liquid desert in the mouth. Almost too bitter to enjoy on its own. Not a complex palate, but a strong one.

Mouthfeel: Soft, fairly thick. Low carbonation. Hops linger en masse the more you drink.

Drinkability: Smooth and mild on the first half, bitter and hoppy on the second. A difficult beer to drink on its own because the dryness becomes cloying. This would pair very well with a hearty, spicy dinner.

Overall, a decent and impressive offering from an up-and-coming brewing. This style is still new so its difficult to gauge what we want out of it.

Grade: 7/10
