Coup de Grisou

This is another Canadian beer donated to the show by (thanks Denis for the beer!). The name, loosely translated, means "a surprise explosion of gas" or "extremely carbonated". I dunno, I'm not a French expert. It certainly was a nice change of pace after that awful Chelada!

I poured an 11.2oz bottle into a wheat beer glass.

Appearance: Bright yellow/orange, extremely hazy with huge yeast and/or wheat chunks visible. Massive carbonation. Forms a large, white, frothy head. Not much retention or lacing, though.

Aroma: Very much in line with a traditional hefeweizen, even though it’s not. Lemon peel, zest, other citrus aromas and spices.

Taste: I’ve never had a wheat beer made with wild yeast before, but that’s probably the best way to describe "Coup de Grisou". It’s pretty typical wheat beer flavor with the earthy wheat, raw citrus pith and mild coriander spice. However, the big difference comes in the finish with a somewhat strong, tart, sour flavor. Almost as if the beer were a hefeweizen/lemonade blend (there are beers with lemonade and lager blended). The aftertaste returns to the initial taste of wheat and spice, with a pleasant orange flavor as well. The sour and tart qualities diminish, but still remain noticeable throughout.

Mouthfeel: thin with a slightly sharp edge to it from the mysterious sour quality.

Drinkability: A great beer to drink on a hot day as the wheat beer and lemonade-like flavors make it quite refreshing. Thin body and mild palate make it highly chuggable, although the sour edge might take a few swigs to get accustomed to. At 5% ABV it’s the kind of beer you could drink in large quantities, although I think the palate might get cloying after two servings.

Overall, a very interesting beer to drink due to its unique flavors. A fun and easy beer to drink given its refreshing character as well.

Grade: 7/10
