Horny Goat HornyCopia Pumpkin Ale

HornyCopia Pumpkin Ale is basically the beer equivalent of a pumpkin Dunkin Donut or a pumpkin flavored coffee creamer. It’s obvious they’re aiming for the mainstream demographic where nutmeg and cinnamon = pumpkin taste (in reality pumpkin doesn’t have much of a flavor other than a mealy, squash-like taste and is traditionally used only as a fermentable in brewing rather than a flavor ingredient).

I poured a 12oz twist-off bottle into a shaker glass.

Appearance: Rusty orange/light brown hue, quite cloudy. Initially forms a large, ivory, soapy head, but it fizzles away rather quickly and leaves no lacing on the glass.

Smell: Your usual "pumpkin flavored" anything: strong nutmeg and cinnamon scents indicating it’s going to be more sweet than spicy.

Taste: According the description on the brand’s website, HornyCopia Pumpkin Ale is meant to be pumpkin pie in a bottle and in that aspect it succeeds. Mild nutmeg up front followed by slight vanilla through the middle and a quick kick of cinnamon on the finish. It’s sweet to be sure, and not nearly as prickly as some other pumpkin brews of similar calibers. It’s not cloying and the finish is quite clean. In fact it might actually be a little too mild for its own good, but I don’t get any off-flavors or overt flaws. What’s not enjoy it?

Drinkability: I have a feeling the so-called "Horny Goat Brewing Company" is aiming for a more mainstream demographic than your usual craft brewery and I could definitely see non beer geeks being able to drink HornyCopia Pumpkin Ale without any problem at all. The body is a bit on the tepid side with a somewhat watery texture. The 5.7% ABV makes it a tad too high to truly session, but I could see drinkers of all experience levels throwing back a couple of these in a row if they had the opportunity.
