Brew Hub Umatilla Coffee Barleywine (2015 vintage)

   AROMA 8/10   APPEARANCE 3/5   TASTE 8/10   PALATE 3/5   OVERALL 15/20Chad9976 (1612) - Lakeland, Florida, USA - JUN 4, 2016

2015 BJCP Category: 30A Spice/Herb/Vegetable (base brew: 22C American Barleywine)

AROMA: A sweet coffee and milk chocolate scent. No hops or distinct malt aromas, though alcohol is present. 9/12

APPEARANCE: Burgundy proper hue; quite clear. Moderate amount of tan foam when poured, but evaporates quickly. 2/3

FLAVOR: Sweet from beginning to end with a slight chocolate candy taste. Slight flavor or red fruit or a general fruit punch sensation linger in the background. Alcohol imparts some brandy-like notes. Coffee emerges on the finish and complements the base brew well to offer a slight contrast of bitterness and roast. Hops are not distinctive, but still strong enough to offer balance. 15/20

MOUTHFEEL: Medium+ body (probably was bigger when fresh but has declined a bit with age). Alcohol warmth is prominent, but tame. Finishes slight sweet. Difficult to drink more than a swig at a time. 3/5

OVERALL IMPRESSION: Not quite as good as a fresh draught pour, though the bottle has been preserved well after almost a year. No obvious oxidation. Palette is interesting and delectable. 8/10
