Stone Mocha IPA

   AROMA 8/10   APPEARANCE 4/5   TASTE 7/10   PALATE 3/5   OVERALL 15/20ChadPolenz (1631) - Lakeland, Florida, USA - JUN 30, 2016

2015 BJCP Category: 30A Spice/Herb/Vegetable Beer (base style: 21A American IPA)

AROMA: Strong citrusy hops and coffee beans. Slight chocolate. 9/12

APPEARANCE: Dark reddish amber; clear body. Small, off white, foam. 2/3

FLAVOR: Surprisingly malty sweet at first. Dank citrusy concentrate is present throughout, though beer is not especially bitter even for an IPA. Coffee flavor is strong initially, but seems to fade. Mild dark chocolate flavor emerges on finish and in aftertaste. Alcohol imparts some heat but doesn’t complement flavors (or distract from them). Tastes definitely work well together; though not quite a mind-blower. 14/20

MOUTHFEEL: Medium body with medium carbonation. Not crisp, but far from syrupy. Alcohol warmth is noticeable, but tolerable. Aftertaste fades quickly. 3/5

OVERALL IMPRESSION: A mocha IPA is a nice twist on the coffee IPA sub-sub-genre. Flavors work well, but end result is merely good rather than amazing. 7/10
