Black Abbey 5 Points IPA

   AROMA 8/10   APPEARANCE 4/5   TASTE 7/10   PALATE 3/5   OVERALL 14/20ChadPolenz (1656) - Lakeland, Florida, USA - JUL 30, 2016

2015 BJCP Category: 21A American IPA

AROMA: Piney/earthy hop showcase; quite resiny. Plenty of malty/fruity sweetness; almost vanilla. 9/12

APPEARANCE: Dark reddish-copper. Quite hazy but translucent. Large, off-white foam retains and laces well. 3/3

FLAVOR: Plenty of amber/red malt sweetness and flavor. Piney/resiny hops complement the malt quite well. Intense dank bitterness on second half. Also a slight tea flavor, but I don’t think it’s tannins. Could possibly pass as a highly hopped amber ale. 14/20

MOUTHFEEL: Medium body; carbonation is a tad low which gives it a slightly sticky texture. Lingering hop astringency is tolerable. 3/5

OVERALL IMPRESSION: Classic East Coast-style IPA, though just a tad too malty and dank. Otherwise, quite enjoyable. 7/10
