2015 BJCP Category: 22A Double IPA

AROMA: Sweet guava/passionfruit concentrate. Pine. Clean malty malty sweetness. 10/12

APPEARANCE: Burnt umber; body is dark but mostly clear (no sediment). Small, tan, foam. 2/3

FLAVOR: Intense maltiness right away. Caramel/honey flavors are prominent. A gentle dank bitterness in the background never really crests or bites and seems much less than the advertised 96 IBUs. Finishes with a juicy sensation plus some alcohol, which is nice. 15/20

MOUTHFEEL: Medium+ body with fairly low CO2. Mouthfeel is noticeably thick, slightly syrupy texture. Alcohol imparts warmth, but is not hot. Lingering bitterness and slight malty cloying. 3/5

OVERALL IMPRESSION: A fine DIPA with enjoyable flavors, but this is a borderline barleywine or strong ale considering how sweet it is. 7/10

TOTAL SCORE: 37/50
