AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20ChadPolenz (1668) - Lakeland, Florida, USA - AUG 15, 2016
2015 BJCP Category: 33A Wood-Aged Beer (base style: 16C Tropical Stout)
AROMA: Sweet dark malt and fruits; whiskey note in the background. 9/12
APPEARANCE: Dark brown to black; fairly clear with no highlights. Small, tan, soapy head mostly evaporates. 1/3
FLAVOR: Quite sweet with smooth dark grain flavors and restrained bitterness. Some cola-like taste and sweetness. Slightly chocolaty. Whiskey-soaked oak chips impart only faint flavor and mostly on the end. Some toffee notes as well. No hop presence. 16/20
MOUTHFEEL: Medium bodied with low carbonation and watery texture. Very smooth with clean aftertaste; no alcohol presence. 3/5
OVERALL IMPRESSION: As a stout it’s pretty good, but the wood aging doesn’t do much for it. Sweet for a stout (but not cloying). 7/10
TOTAL SCORE: 36/50
