Victory Selene Saison

   AROMA 9/10   APPEARANCE 4/5   TASTE 8/10   PALATE 4/5   OVERALL 18/20ChadPolenz (1706) - Lakeland, Florida, USA - NOV 4, 2016

2015 BJCP Category: 28A Brett Beer (base style: 25B Saison)

AROMA: Saison yeast esters (clove, black pepper) plus Brett funk. A bittersweet component of roasted malt and chocolate. Some orange citrus as well. 10/12

APPEARANCE: Seemingly black and opaque (actually deep mahogany). Large, tan, foamy head mostly dissipates. 3/3

FLAVOR: Lightly sweet dark malt and complementary fruit flavors up front. Slight milk chocolate and a hint of orange citrus also noticeable at first. Palette turns on a dime as dry smoky and spicy phenols emerge (creating for slight astringency). A consistent Brett tartness in the background is both interesting and enjoyable without upstaging the base brew flavors. 17/20

MOUTHFEEL: Medium body; high carbonation. Finish is quite dry with a slight tartness from Brett. Alcohol presence is minimal. 4/5

OVERALL IMPRESSION: Impressive combination of flavors, ingredients and brewing/fermentation techniques. A must-try for Saison lovers. 9/10
