2015 BJCP Category: 30A Spice/Herb/Vegetable (base style: 26D Belgian Dark Strong Ale)

AROMA: A potpourri-like essence of ginger, cinnamon, and chile pepper. Belgian yeast esters impart some fruit and peppery notes. General brown malt presence; no distinct hops. 9/12

APPEARANCE: Dark burgundy/brown hue; clear body. Moderate tan foam retains and laces well enough. 3/3

FLAVOR: Belgian base brew is quite familiar with fruity/spicy flavors in the palette. Dark malts and red fruits are evident immediately, but not especially sweet. Second half is a melange of spices, though ginger, cinnamon and chile pepper are most prominent. Chocolate/cocoa nibs create for a background sweetness without becoming cloying. No boozy sensation. Hops are low and earthy. Good combination of flavors. 16/20

MOUTHFEEL: Medium bodied; medium-low carbonation. Smooth texture. No alcohol warmth for an 8% ABV brew. Body isn’t quite as hefty as expected, but very drinkable. Yeast esters leave an earthy/spicy aftertaste. 4/5

OVERALL IMPRESSION: An interesting combination of spices that work well together. Base brew is a tad weak, but otherwise a very good beer. 8/10
