2015 BJCP Category: 30A Spice/Herb/Vegetable (base style: 16A Sweet Stout)

AROMA: A potpourri of spices; though cinnamon and chiles dominate. Chocolate and coffee are noticeable as well. Slight lactose sugar presence. Nothing in the way of distinct malts or hops, but they’re not absent, either. 9/12

APPEARANCE: Dark brown or black proper. Moderate dark tan froth retains and laces well. 3/3

FLAVOR: Sweet stout base is evident throughout, but especially up front. Dark malt and lactose sugar create for initial, but restrained, sweetness. Some chocolate flavor lurks in the background. Once it hits the apex all the spices emerge as a melange. Cinnamon and nutmeg seem to dominate, creating for a pie-like taste. Coffee and chiles combine at the end for a spicy/warming sensation with brief heat in the throat. Palette isn’t quite as robust as I’d expect for 8.1%, but the flavors do combine well. 16/20

MOUTHFEEL: Medium body; medium-low CO2. Creamy texture and smooth drinkability. Fairly clean aftertaste. Beer doesn’t seem to be as beefy as 8.1%, though. 4/5

OVERALL IMPRESSION: Impressed by how these ingredients work so well together. It should be a bigger beer, though. 8/10
