2015 BJCP Category: 29C Specialty Fruit Beer (base style: 22A American Strong Ale)
AROMA: Grape juice and red wine barrels. No acidic or tannic character.
Slight confectionery sweetness. Minor dank hop aroma. No boozeiness.
APPEARANCE: Magenta/violet hue akin to grape juice. Moderate white foamy head retains and laces well. 3/3
The grape juice and wine barrel character dominate the palette. Flavor
is fruity for the most part, but not especially sweet or cloying. Mild
dank bitterness at the apex with slight pine flavor. Backend has a sweet
taste of caramel/chocolate and toast from the wood. Very interesting
brew, but unbalanced as the wine-like flavors usurp the base style
MOUTHFEEL: Full-bodied, medium-low carbonation.
Texture is smooth with only minor alcohol warmth as it finishes.
Aftertaste is quite clean, too. This is all surprising consider the beer
is 13.2% ABV. 4/5
OVERALL IMPRESSION: Definitely not the kind of beer that rates well to style, but an impressive brewing feat and quite fun to drink. 8/10
