AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20ChadPolenz (1778) - Lakeland, Florida, USA - MAR 26, 2017
2015 BJCP Category: 20C Imperial Stout
AROMA: Dark malt but not intense. Notes of black licorice, sugar, and coffee. A noticeable alcohol scent. 8/12
Very dark brown with hazy magenta highlights (otherwise opaque).
Moderate tan foam retains and laces fairly well. 2/3
Moderate strong dark maltiness throughout. A bit mild at first with a
general unsweetened chocolate or coffee taste. A firm bitter bite at the
apex finishing with a resiny/piney hop flavor. Back end is quite sweet
with notes of caramel and toffee with some dark fruits and black
licorice in the aftertaste. 15/20
MOUTHFEEL: Medium-full bodied
with moderate carbonation. More crisp than velvety, though it is smooth.
Seems a bit lighter than 9% ABV. Alcohol imparts a drying sensation and
can be felt in the sinuses. 3/5
OVERALL IMPRESSION: A good imperial stout that’s well-balanced and no challenge to drink. 7/10
