Samuel Adams Tropic of Yuzu

ChadPolenz (1795) - Lakeland, Florida, USA - JUN 17, 2017

BBD: 9/2017

2015 BJCP Category: 29B Fruit and Spice Beer (base style: 1D American Wheat Beer)

AROMA: Moderate wheat bread presence coupled with a citrusy/tropical fruit aroma (juice is dominate, but not by an extreme amount). Faint backdrop of spice. No discernible esters or hops (though either may blend with the fruit character from the added Yuzu juice). 9/12

APPEARANCE: Mostly clear shade of deep gold/pale orange; effervescent. Large white foam mostly dissipates; no lacing. 2/3

FLAVOR: A wheaty presence upfront with an underlying lime-like tartness. Grains of Paradise are also evident in the form of a continuous warm prickly spice sensation and flavor akin to cinnamon. Yuzu juice become quite prominent on the finish with a lovely tropical/citrusy taste (similar to lime and mango). Spices linger in the throat and on the tongue for a warming sensation. No particular hop flavor or bitterness; nor yeast esters. Interesting and impressive use of ingredients that work surprisingly well together. 18/20

MOUTHFEEL: Medium bodied and carbonation. Quite refreshing at first, but spices become stronger and create for a tingly warming sensation. Seems a bit strong at 6% ABV; same flavors would work at a more sessionable range. 4/5

OVERALL IMPRESSION: This is what a fruit and spice beer should be. It’s a creative, tasty recipe that’s executed very well. 9/10
