2015 BJCP Category: 16B Oatmeal Stout

AROMA: Moderately strong fruity aroma (e.g. raisins, red fruits). Moderately coffee & vanilla presence. Faint diacetyl; possible oxidation - but these characteristics are not distracting. 9/12

APPEARANCE: Seemingly opaque black with clear garnet highlights. Large tan frothy foam mostly dissipates. 2/3

FLAVOR: Mild palette initially. Subdued notes of fruit. Becomes quite bitter at the apex with coffee and roasted malt flavor. Finishes rather sweet with genuine oatmeal taste. Leaves a tobacco/roasted coffee aftertaste. Minor presence of oxidation. No distinctive hop flavor or bitterness. 12/20

MOUTHFEEL: Medium-light body and carbonation. Very smooth and comfortable, but feels slightly watery. Seems much more sessionable strength than 5.8% ABV. 3/5

OVERALL IMPRESSION: A valiant effort for the style, but comes up a bit short. It is at least satisfactory. 6/10
