Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier Märzen (2017 re-review to BJCP specs)

2015 BJCP Category: 6B Rauchbier

AROMA: Fairly strong Beechwood smoke. Akin to leaves burning. Base malt is present in the form of general amber/brown maltiness but no sweetness is implied. Has a slight dark chocolate scent. No discernible hops. Clean fermentation. 10/12

APPEARANCE: Seemingly black but actually dark reddish-brown (22-34 SRM). Clear body. Large tan creamy froth retains and laces well. 3/3

FLAVOR: Typical German amber lager malt character up front. Malty, but not particularly sweet. Slight Maillard character, but not toasty or roasty. Smoke emerges on the second half with a slight bacon flavor (nothing salty or greasy, though) which complements the recipe well. There is a brief bittersweet chocolate flavor right as it finishes. Faintest trace of spicy/earthy hops in the background. Clean lager fermentation. 16/20

MOUTHFEEL: Medium body; medium-low carbonation. Smooth, creamy texture; comfortable mouthfeel. Smoke lingers briefly in the aftertaste, but is otherwise clean and tolerable. Seems a bit stronger than 5.1% ABV. 4/5

OVERALL IMPRESSION: A classic example of the style for sure. I would love to try this fresh. 9/10
