Crooked Can High Stepper American IPA

DOC: 8/16/17

2015 BJCP Category: 21A American IPA

AROMA: Strong American hop aroma of citrus, some grass or spice, and pine needles. Clean base malt with no sweetness. Clean fermentation. No alcohol presence. 10/12

APPEARANCE: Very hazy shade of maize/light copper (7-9 SRM). Large white sudsy head retains and laces well. 3/3

FLAVOR: High hop flavor throughout with a grassy/herbal flavor up front and a citrusy/juicy taste on the backend. Bitterness is high, but not astringent. Faint taste of caramel can be found in the background, though palette is not sweet per se. Malt base has no distinctiveness, but does offer balance. Clean fermentation; no alcohol taste or warmth. 18/20

MOUTHFEEL: Medium-full body; medium carbonation. Smooth, comfortable texture. Hops linger with tolerable resiny flavor and sensation. Highly drinkable for 7% ABV. 4/5

OVERALL IMPRESSION: This is definitely what American craft beer drinkers want in an IPA. Great example of the style. 9/10
