The Duck-Rabbit Schwarzbier

BBD: 10/2017

2015 BJCP Category: 8B Schwarzbier

AROMA: Moderate malt presence with a strong caramel sweetness. Seems to have slight dark chocolate or coffee in the background, though nothing of the usual roasted malt per se (likely due to age of the bottle). Faint herbal/earthy hops. Clean lager fermentation. 9/12

APPEARANCE: Seemingly black but actually deep ruby red (22-34 SRM). Mostly clear body. Moderate tan froth retains and laces well. 3/3

FLAVOR: Light to moderate malt base with slight bready flavor. There is an underlying flavor of caramel throughout, but it is not particularly sweet. Roasted malt emerges on the finish with a strong, but brief, sensation of coffee and dark chocolate. Little to no hop flavor; minor dry bitterness. Oxidation is present in the aftertaste. Clean lager fermentation. 15/20

MOUTHFEEL: Medium body and carbonation. Smooth texture. Slightly astringent aftertaste, but easily tolerable. No alcohol presence for 5.8% ABV. 3/5

OVERALL IMPRESSION: A good example of the style which would probably be fantastic if it were fresh. 7/10
