Freigeist Ehrenfeider Alt

DOB: ?

2015 BJCP Category: 7B Altbier

AROMA: Brown continental malt without sweetness. Some toasty/nutty aromatics give it some character. A mild, but noticeable, red fruity scent is present. Hops are virtually undetectable and may have slight floral quality. Clean lager fermentation. 9/12

APPEARANCE: Brown/ruby hue (22-30 SRM - too dark for the style); cloudy body. Large tan frothy foam retains and laces well. 2/3

FLAVOR: Moderate malty taste throughout. Brown continental malt with some toast flavor. Has a bit of a nutty taste on the backend and into the aftertaste. Also seems to have a slightly sharp, staleness (but not the usual signs of oxidation). Bitterness is moderately low with a dry, slightly floral flavor. Fruity esters emerge briefly on the second half. 15/20

MOUTHFEEL: Medium body and carbonation. Smooth; slightly refreshing. Slightly astringent aftertaste. Sessionable at 4.8% ABV. 4/5

OVERALL IMPRESSION: The only Altbier I currently have access to; at least it does the style justice. 7/10

TOTAL SCORE: 37/50
