Samuel Adams Black Lager (2017 re-review to BJCP specs)

BBD: 2/2018

2015 BJCP Category: 8B Schwarzbier

AROMA: Moderate dark (not burnt) malt. Not particularly sweet, though there is a cocoa powder-like component. Faint bready scent. Low floral/earthy hops. Clean fermentation. No sulfur. 10/12

APPEARANCE: Seemingly black but actually a deep ruby hue (22-27 SRM). Clear body. Large tan foamstand. Retains and laces well. 3/3

FLAVOR: Moderately rich bready malt flavor immediately. Sweet cocoa taste on the backend with slightly bitter roasted malt/coffee flavor as it finishes. Medium-light hop character with spicy/earthy flavor and medium bitterness. Aftertaste is of bittersweet chocolate. Clean fermentation. 17/20

MOUTHFEEL: Medium body and carbonation. Very smooth, comfortable texture. Somewhat refreshing; highly drinkable. Plenty of flavor for only 4.9% ABV. 5/5

OVERALL IMPRESSION: May be a tad sweet for the style, but otherwise conforms well to the specs. Fun and easy to drink. 9/10
