Cigar City Maduro Brown Ale (2017 re-review to BJCP specs)

DOC: 10/30/17

2015 BJCP Category: 19C American Brown Ale

AROMA: Malty-sweet with browned (but not roasty/burnt) malt. Has a chocolate cereal-like character to it. Oatmeal is also present. Hops are moderate with an earthy/floral character and complement malts well. Slight smokey or tobacco character. 10/12

APPEARANCE: Dark brown hue with brown highlights (22-27 SRM). Clear body. Large, tan, soapy foam mostly dissipates. 3/3

FLAVOR: Sweet brown/chocolate/crystal malts throughout (though not bready or rich per se). Oatmeal imparts a slight cereal flavor and sweetness. There is an underlying flavor of roasted malt and a subtle tobacco or smoke character. This becomes quite prominent right at the finish to offer contrast and balance to the sweet malt. Hops are moderate with earthy/floral flavor and slightly dank bitterness. Slightly bitter aftertaste. 18/20

MOUTHFEEL: Medium-light body; moderate carbonation. Smooth, but far from velvety. Easily drinkable. Feels much lighter and more overtly sessionable than its 5.5% ABV. 4/5

OVERALL IMPRESSION: A fantastic American brown ale that has endured for years for all the right reasons. 9/10
