Samuel Adams Amber Bock

BBD: 4/2018

2015 BJCP Category: 6C Dunkles Bock

AROMA: Medium-high bready malty aroma. Slight toast character. Seems to have a lightly sweet honey/lemon character (bottle seems way too young for this to be oxidation). Very faint Noble hop presence. Clean lager fermentation. 9/12

APPEARANCE: Clear beautiful copper hue (13-17 SRM). Large off-white foam; retains and laces well. 3/3

FLAVOR: Fairly rich maltiness with a whole grain bread flavor. Slight toasted notes/Maillard character in the background. Sweetness is low at first, but finish features a fairly strong caramel/honey flavor which is quite nice. Hops are low throughout and impart a subtle spicy flavor and some bitterness to offer balance. Well-attenuated with clean lager fermentation. Aftertaste is slightly sweet. 16/20

MOUTHFEEL: Medium body and carbonation. Smooth with a crisp finish. Stronger than the average Samuel Adams brew at 6% ABV and certainly feels and drinks as such. 4/5

OVERALL IMPRESSION: Not quite a wholly authentic representation of the style, but close. Impressive considering the brewery and their target audience. 8/10
