Belhaven Scottish Ale

Bottling code: T1 17080

Judged to 2015 BJCP Style Guidelines for: 14C Scottish Export

AROMA: Brown malt with slight caramel/nutty character. Not especially sweet overall. Slight fruity esters. Very low earthy hops. 9/12

APPEARANCE: Mostly clear shade of nut brown mahogany (17-22 SRM). Moderate off-white foam retains and laces well. 3/3

FLAVOR: Malt-forward palette, but not sweet or rich. Taste is of brown malt without any roasty or smoke character. Some caramel flavor in the background and a bit of a nutty taste on the finish (though this could also be an earthy taste from the hops). Bitterness is low and dry. Fruity apple-like esters emerge on the aftertaste. No peat character. 18/20

MOUTHFEEL: Medium-light body with moderate carbonation. Crisp, but smooth and not spastic. Somewhat refreshing; temptingly sessionable at 5.2% ABV. 4/5

OVERALL IMPRESSION: This is what a true Scottish Ale should be. Maybe not the most delicious beer in the world, but to-spec for the style for sure. 9/10
