Hofbräu Winter Spezial

bottling code: L278Q

Judged to 2015 BJCP Style Guidelines for:

AROMA: Bready-malty nose with fairly sweet component of dark fruit (cherry, plum, raisin). Trace amount of toasted malt. Slight alcohol presence ties everything together. Clean lager fermentation. 10/12

APPEARANCE: Deep, clear shade of cherry red (17-22 SRM). Large, tan foamy head retains and laces well. 3/3

FLAVOR: Rather rich bready malt at the core. Has an authentic sweetness to it. Fruit presence is much subtler than nose implies; though flavors are nice. Mild bitterness at the apex with a toasted malt taste. Caramel flavor emerges on the backend. Aftertaste is  malty sweet. Alcohol is present, but blends well with the palette. 18/20

MOUTHFEEL: Medium-full body; moderate carbonation. Smooth, comfortable texture. No heat or astringency from alcohol. Surprisingly drinkable at 8.4% ABV. 5/5

OVERALL IMPRESSION: This goes to show how robust and complex (and delectable) the doppelbock style can be. 10/10
