Samuel Adams Fresh As Helles

Best before date: 5/2018

Judged to 2015 BJCP Style Guidelines for: 30A Spice, Herb, or Vegetable Beer (base style: 4A Munich Helles)

AROMA: Fresh orange citrus, honey and flowery aroma. Smells a bit juicy. Clean, grainy base malt. Citrusy hops. Clean fermentation. 9/12

APPEARANCE: Clear, bright golden/pale orange hue (5-7 SRM). Moderate white foam; retains and laces well. 3/3

FLAVOR: Lightly sweet grainy malt throughout; very basic. Background note of orange varies in intensity. A bit subtle at first with a sweet, children's cereal-like flavor at first followed by a fairy rich honey and juice concentrate flavor on the back end. I find it difficult to believe all these flavors are derived from orange blossom petals alone (label does indicate "natural flavors"). American-style citrusy hop flavor is also present, with a firm bitterness that doesn't go overboard. Aftertaste is a quite sweet. Clean fermentation. 13/20

MOUTHFEEL: Medium body; medium-high carbonation. Crisp and somewhat refreshing. Too strong for a spring/summer seasonal at 5.4% ABV. 3/5

OVERALL IMPRESSION: Though enjoyable, it tastes rather faux and ignores what makes the base style great. 6/10
