Traquair House Ale

Best before date: 1/28/2027

Judged to 2015 BJCP Style Guidelines for: 17C Wee Heavy

AROMA: Fairly strong malt presence with caramel and toffee notes. Dark fruits are also quite prominent (red apple, raisin, cherry). Faint earthy/floral hops. No alcohol, oxidation or diacetyl. 10/12

APPEARANCE: Deep ruby/brownish hue (22-34 SRM). Moderate, off-white froth retains fairly well. 3/3

FLAVOR: Fruit and malt flavors throughout. Apple, cherry and raisin from the yeast esters combine with confectionery notes from the malt for a sweet (but uncloying), complex palette. There is a subtle woody character in the background throughout and even faint smokiness (nothing peaty, though). Hops impart some dry bitterness for balance and faint earthy/floral flavors. Alcohol is tame and helps with the balance. Medium-dry aftertaste. 18/20

MOUTHFEEL: Medium body (should be a little bigger) and moderate carbonation. Quite smooth and highly drinkable for 7.2% ABV. There is no alcohol warmth whatsoever. 4/5

OVERALL IMPRESSION: This is what a REAL Wee Heavy/Scotch Ale should be. May not be perfect, but pretty close. 9/10
