Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier Weizen
Fill date: ?
Judged to 2015 BJCP Style Guidelines for: 32A Classic Style Smoked Beer (base style: 10B Dunkles Weissbier)
AROMA: Prominent smokiness with a bacon or campfire character. The base style is quite subtle with a mild bready/wheaty presence but only faint banana/clove characteristics. No hops (none needed). Not phenolic or rancid in any way; just unbalanced. 8/12
APPEARANCE: Dark, translucent, cloudy brown body (22-27 SRM). Large, off-white foam mostly dissipates and leaves minor lacing. 3/3
FLAVOR: Smoke is definitely the main course rather than a garnish, though the taste is delectable with a bacony/woodsy flavor (not greasy or phenolic). Base style seems closer to a Dunkles than a traditional Weissbier. Medium-low bready/wheat flavor with slight chocolate notes right as it finishes. Banana/clove yeast character is so faint that is barely noticeable. No hops (none needed). No oxidation or other handling flaws, though. 13/20
MOUTHFEEL: Medium body; medium-high carbonation. Soft, smooth, comfortable texture. Smoke flavor lingers, but is pleasant and easily tolerable. Single 500ml serving is satisfying at 5.2% ABV. 4/5
OVERALL IMPRESSION: Though tasty, the balance is leans too heavily towards the smoke (this is likely due to the age of the bottle). 6/10
TOTAL SCORE: 34/50
