Founders Porter (2018 re-review to BJCP specs)

Fill date: 12/28/2017

Judged to 2015 BJCP Style Guidelines for: 20A American Stout

AROMA: Noticeably hoppy with a dank, resiny/piney/floral character. Plenty of dark malt with a coffee-and-cream character. No chocolate or confectionery notes. Clean fermentation. No alcohol presence. 10/12

APPEARANCE: Opaque dark brown (44+) with deep mahogany highlights. Very large, dark tan, frothy foam retains and laces wonderfully. 3/3

FLAVOR: Dark malt up front with a chocolate/toasty flavor. Roasted character is present, but tame. This flavor emerges with a brief boost right as it finishes. Hops are quite strong with a dank, resiny/piney/earthy flavor. Bitterness is assertive at 45 IBUs. Aftertaste is medium-dry with a slight starchy sensation. No yeast esters. No alcohol presence. 18/20

MOUTHFEEL: Medium-full body; moderate carbonation. Texture is soft and smooth. Just a general comfortable mouthfeel. Remarkably drinkable at 6.5% ABV. 5/5

OVERALL IMPRESSION: Pretty much a perfect American porter. A versatile palette with great drinkability. 10/10
