North Peak Rascal Cherry Porter

Fill date: 12/7/2017

Judged to 2015 BJCP Style Guidelines for: 29A Fruit Beer (base style: 20A American Porter)

AROMA: Definitely has the porter component with a roasted malt and coffee-and-creamer nose. I smell no cherry whatsoever. 6/12

APPEARANCE: Deep, opaque black (44 SRM) with a slight maroon tint. Small tan foam never completely dissipates and laces the glass well. 3/3

FLAVOR: Base palette seems closer to a sweet stout than a porter. Fairly intense roasted malt flavor at the apex and light lactose-like sweetness on the finish. Bitterness is fairly low and derives more from the dark malt than the hops. No discernible hop character. There is almost no cherry flavor here; only a faint cherry tartness in the aftertaste. Not bad-tasting at all, just not to style. 9/20

MOUTHFEEL: Medium-light body and moderate carbonation. Smooth, but feels a tad watery. Should be fairly rich and luxurious at 6.5% ABV. This feels like a more overt session beer. 3/5

OVERALL IMPRESSION: Fails as a fruit beer, but works alright as a decent dark beer (but not necessarily as a porter). 25/10
