Swamp Head Midnight Oil

Fill date: 12/11/17

Judged to 2015 BJCP Style Guidelines for: 30A Spice, Herb, or Vegetable Beer (base style: 16B Oatmeal Stout)

AROMA: Fairly strong roasted malt and black coffee presence. Coffee seems like a medium roast with some sugar. Oatmeal presence is also quite prominent with a slight nutty/grainy character. No yeast esters or hops (none needed) 10/12

APPEARANCE: Opaque black (44+ SRM). Large, dark tan creamy froth. Retains and laces well. 3/3

FLAVOR: Rich dark maltiness with a slight chocolate character. There is a fairly intense roasty flavor with a firm dry bitterness. The coffee is evident immediately and again on the finish and complements the roasted malt well. Taste is akin to medium-dark coffee sans cream and sugar. Oatmeal offers slight sweetness, but also a nutty/grainy flavor. Hop flavor is difficult to perceive. Balance is bitter with a medium-dry aftertaste. Clean fermentation. 16/20

MOUTHFEEL: Medium body; medium-high carbonation. Smooth, but not creamy or rich. Roasted malts linger. Impressive amount of robustness for only 5% ABV. 4/5

OVERALL IMPRESSION: Nice use of coffee to enhance the roasty character of the style. Interesting that it's not a dessert beer. 9/10
