Burial Ceremonial Session IPA

Fill date: 11/2/17

Judged to 2015 BJCP Style Guidelines for: 21B Specialty IPA: Session IPA

AROMA: Fairly strong citrusy hoppy aroma of lemon zest and a slight peppery note. Nondescript malt base; no specialty character. Seemingly complete and clean fermentation. 9/12

APPEARANCE: Very cloudy pale yellow hue (1-4 SRM). Large white soapy suds mostly dissipate. 2/3

FLAVOR: Moderate hop flavor throughout with a lemony character (mostly the pith, but some fruit). Some saison-like spice/pepper notes, though subtle. A brief hop nibble at the apex, but actual bitterness is too tame for the style (even the listed 35 IBUs seems a bit high). Malt base is light and slightly wheaty; reminiscent of a blonde ale. Fairly high attenuation. 13/20

MOUTHFEEL: Medium-light body; medium-high carbonation. Quite refreshing and highly drinkable. Ideal summer beer at only 4% ABV (especially in 16oz cans). 4/5

OVERALL IMPRESSION: Tasty and highly drinkable to be sure, though the hops are too subtle even by session IPA standards. Better considered a pale ale or blonde. 6/10
