DuClaw Hellrazer Part Deux

Fill date: 1/11/18

Judged to 2015 BJCP Style Guidelines for: 22A Double IPA

AROMA: Muted nose with little aromatics. Quite malt-forward with slight caramel; bready notes. Hop aroma is extremely weak for "double dry hopped". Faint citrus juice concentrate. No alcohol presence. 4/12

APPEARANCE: Closer to a red IPA with a hazy shade of dark copper/light brown (13-17 SRM). Large, off-white foam mostly dissipates. 1/3

FLAVOR: Malty body throughout. Seems a bit syrupy and very under-attenuated (surprisingly, it is not all that sweet). No specialty character other than a subtle caramel/bready note. Bitterness is extremely low; absolutely no hop bite. Virtually no hop flavor, either; just a faded dank sensation. Some alcohol creates for minor vanilla flavor. Not sure why this is so off style considering the can is fresh. Possibly bad handling? 7/20

MOUTHFEEL: Medium-full body; medium carbonation. Smooth texture with minor alcohol warmth. Though hops are weak, they do leave a sticky/resiny aftertaste. Feels lighter than 9% ABV. 2/5

OVERALL IMPRESSION: This is a poorly-made brew that should've been recalled. It's nowhere close to spec for the style. What happened? 3/10
