Sierra Nevada Hop Bullet Double IPA

Fill date: 1/6/18

Judged to 2015 BJCP Style Guidelines for: 22A Double IPA

AROMA: Reasonably high hop presence with citrus peel, slight pine, and a general floral character. Malt base is standard; no distinctive character (none needed), but enough for balance. No alcohol presence. 9/12

APPEARANCE: Clear, amber honey-like hue (2-4 SRM). Large white froth retains and laces very well. 3/3

FLAVOR: Plenty of hop flavor throughout with a variety of notes. Begins with a subtle earthy/piney taste and finishes with a bitter, dry, citrus pith taste. Bitterness is moderately high, but seems well short of the advertised 80 IBUs. Hops linger, but are not astringent. Combines elements of classic east and west coast styles, but doesn't offer anything new or particularly exciting. Malt base is strong enough to offer balance with just a touch of sweetness. No specialty character (none needed). No alcohol presence. 16/20

MOUTHFEEL: Medium body; medium-high carbonation. Smooth, but still crisp. Feels like something closer to a standard IPA rather than anything thick and syrupy. Feels a bit lighter than 8% ABV as there is no alcohol warmth. 4/5

OVERALL IMPRESSION: Not quite as intense as I prefer in a DIPA, but it certainly meets the style guidelines. A standard DIPA in every way. 8/10

TOTAL SCORE: 40/50
