Central State Garden Gose

Fill date: ?

Judged to 2015 BJCP Style Guidelines for: 27 Historical Beer: Gose

AROMA: Moderate wheaty character closer to standard bread than sourdough. Fairly prominent, clean lemony scent along with a touch of salt. The lacto character is quite subtle; almost difficult to detect. No discernible hops. 8/12

APPEARANCE: Extremely hazy shade of milky yellow (1-2 SRM). Moderate white foam mostly dissipates and leaves no lacing. 2/3

FLAVOR: Light clean lactic sourness up front. Palette has a distinct lemony flavor throughout which creates for a lemonade-like taste when combined with the lactic character. Coriander is fairly mute, though the taste does emerge briefly on the finish. Salt is also quiet and is only detectable briefly in the aftertaste. Though brewed with Cascade hops, they offer no obvious flavor contribution. Bitterness is quite low as the balance is provided by the microbiota. Wheat and malt base is enough to give the brew a backbone, but offers little in terms of sweetness or bready character. 12/20

MOUTHFEEL: Light bodied; moderate carbonation (a little too light and less bubbly than it should be). Very smooth and refreshing with a tart finish and clean aftertaste. At 3.6% ABV it is highly quaffable in warm weather. 3/5

OVERALL IMPRESSION: Definitely has the basics of the style down, but it may be a little too light for its own good. 6/10
