Highland Oatmeal Porter

Fill date: 3/8/18

Judged to 2015 BJCP Style Guidelines for: 30A Spice, Herb, or Vegetable Beer (base style: 20A American Porter)

AROMA: Slightly sweet, cereal-like nose with faint dark malt presence but nothing roasty. Moderate hop presence akin to pine or flowers. Mild aromas all around; nothing indicative of a traditional dark beer. 6/12

APPEARANCE: Clear, dark ruby/brown (22-34 SRM). Fairly large, tan froth retains and laces well. 3/3

FLAVOR: Fairly sweet palette overall with moderate dark malt flavor but lacking any roasty or coffee-like character. Surprisingly strong hop presence throughout with noticeable piney/floral flavor. Bitterness is strong enough for balance. Beer lacks any overt oatmeal flavor or other associated tastes. Finish is slightly bitter and dry. 9/20

MOUTHFEEL: Medium body; medium carbonation. Smooth texture; does not feel viscous or heavy on the tongue. Feels much lighter than 5.9% ABV. 3/5

OVERALL IMPRESSION: Is neither a traditional porter nor oatmeal stout; just a boring dark beer. Not sure I see the point. 4/10
