NoDa Coco Loco

Fill date: 3/30/18

Judged to 2015 BJCP Style Guidelines for: 30A Spice, Herb, or Vegetable Beer (base style: 20A American Porter)

AROMA: Even blend of base porter dark maltiness and chocolate and coconut additives. Nose is fairly sweet, but also contains some roasted malt presence that is reminiscent of coffee. Moderate earthy/floral hop presence. Clean fermentation. No alcohol presence. 10/12

APPEARANCE: Extremely deep ruby to black proper (32-44 SRM). Clear body. Large tan, frothy foam retains and laces well. 3/3

FLAVOR: Lightly sweet at first with notes of milk chocolate and dark malt. There is an underlying roasted flavor, though most of the bitterness comes from the hops which also impart a moderately-low earthy/floral flavor. Coconut emerges on the backend to provide a spicy balance to sweet malty base. Aftertaste is bittersweet; akin to coffee with sugar and cream. Clean fermentation; no alcohol presence. 17/20

MOUTHFEEL: Medium-full body; medium carbonation. Texture is very smooth; borderline creamy or silky. Great drinkability at 6.2% ABV and no alcohol warmth. 5/5

OVERALL IMPRESSION: A great dessert beer that's tasty, highly drinkable, AND to-spec. This is how you make a good SHV brew. 10/10
