Stone Scorpion Bowl IPA

Fill date: 3/1/18
Enjoy by date: 6/14/18

Judged to 2015 BJCP Style Guidelines for: 21A American IPA

AROMA: Moderately-strong tropical and citrus fruit-like American hops. Slightly sweet character, but not malty per se. Clean fermentation; no alcohol presence. 9/10

APPEARANCE: Mostly clear amber/pale orange hue (5-7 SRM). Large white frothy foam retains and laces well. 3/3

FLAVOR: Moderate hops throughout with a standard West Coast hop profile of citrusy/tropical fruit flavors. There is a slight herbal or spicy note as well. Actual bitterness seems low for the style (much lower than the advertised 76 IBUs). Malt base is mostly nondescript with no specialty character (none needed). There is a rather odd, slightly sweet, sherry-like flavor which is usually found in oxidized beer (unlikely considering the freshness of the bottle; could be due to the use of a new hop or yeast strain). Aftertaste is slightly dry from hops, but otherwise neutral. Clean fermentation profile; no alcohol presence. 12/20

MOUTHFEEL: Medium body; moderate carbonation. Quite smooth and comfortable. Neither refreshing nor astringent. Feels lighter than 7.5% ABV, which makes it easily drinkable. This is definitely a single IPA.

OVERALL IMPRESSION: While not bad, this is a surprisingly tame offering considering the brewery and the beer's name. 6/10
