Catawba White Zombie

Fill date: 3/20/18

Judged to 2015 BJCP Style Guidelines for: 24A Witbier

AROMA: Fruity/zesty aroma of sweet orange peel and coriander (though it does have a spiciness akin to chamomile or nutmeg). Low malty/wheat sweetness. Light fruity yeast esters. No discernible hops (none needed). 9/12

APPEARANCE: Pale golden hue (2-4 SRM); cloudy body. Small white foam mostly dissipates, but leaves some lacing. 2/3

FLAVOR: Moderate malty/wheat base though most of the sweetness comes from the orange peel and yeast esters. Coriander imparts a slight spiciness and complement the orange well. Slight chamomile/nutmeg-like flavor on the finish and briefly in the aftertaste. No lactic character or hop flavor (none needed). Bitterness is quite low. Palette is balanced and has most of the characteristics of the style, but is entirely too mild as a whole. 12/20

MOUTHFEEL: Light body; medium carbonation. Smooth and refreshing with a mostly neutral aftertaste. Seems much lighter than 5.1% ABV; tempting to session in warm weather. 3/5

OVERALL IMPRESSION: Has what you want an expect in a witbier - just not enough of it. 6/10
