1906 Reserva Especial

Best before date: 3/2019

Judged to 2015 BJCP Style Guidelines for: 7A Vienna Lager

AROMA: Moderately-low brown malt, but with only slight toasty/nutty character. No sweetness. Attenuation seems high. Hop presence is noticeable with a floral/spicy character. Difficult to tell if the slight skunky aroma is from the hops or lightstrike (bottle is brown, albeit light). Some oxidation notes. Clean lager fermentation. 8/12

APPEARANCE: Beautiful crystal-clear copper hue (7-9 SRM). Moderate white foam retains and laces well. 3/3

FLAVOR: Soft browned malt character throughout, but without overt sweetness nor toasted flavor. Hops are fairly strong for an amber lager with moderate dry bitterness and a spicy/floral taste. There is a slight bready character on the backend which lingers briefly as do the hops. Aftertaste is dry, otherwise. Clean lager fermentation. 12/20

MOUTHFEEL: Medium-light body; moderately-high carbonation. Smooth with a crisp finish. Somewhat refreshing. Feels like a much lighter, more table-strength brew than it 6.5% ABV. 4/5

OVERALL IMPRESSION: Nice beer, but it doesn't really exemplify a Vienna Lager that well (it's closer to a Czech Amber). 6/10
