Clown Shoes Moon Bear

Fill date: 2/1/18

Judged to 2015 BJCP Style Guidelines for: 30A Spice, Herb, or Vegetable Beer (base style: 16A Sweet Stout)

AROMA: Fairly sweet nose with plenty of dark malt along with a significant dark fruit and black licorice character. Elements of chocolate or vanilla. Coffee is present, but rather subtle. Hops are muted. No alcohol. 9/12

APPEARANCE: Inky black, opaque (44 SRM). Large dark brown foam slowly dissipates. 3/3

FLAVOR: Palette is sweet throughout, but never cloying. Appears to be fairly well attenuated. Maltiness creates for a delectable dark fruit sensation along with some black licorice. Coffee emerges through the middle, but only on the first few sips (after which point it recedes into the background). Roasted malt appears on the backend to provide bitterness and contrast. Nice handoff between flavors. Hops are subtle as far as flavor (a little earthy or piney), but do offer just enough bitterness for balance. Alcohol is quite subtle and seems to complement the sweet, confectionery flavors from the malt without being distracting. 14/20

MOUTHFEEL: Medium body; moderately-low carbonation. Feels just a tad light or thin. It is comfortable and smooth with just a modicum of warmth from the 7% ABV. Overall drinkability is high. 4/5

OVERALL IMPRESSION: A solid dessert brew for sure; just not ideal with age. A fun drinking experience. 7/10
