Founders Dank Wood

Fill date: 4/10/2018

Judged to 2015 BJCP Style Guidelines for: 33B Specialty Wood-Aged Beer (base style: 21B Specialty IPA - Red IPA)

AROMA: Fairly moderate red maltiness with a slight fruity quality to the nose. Bourbon barrel is also present  in the form of vanilla and wood. Hops are noticeable with a citrus/floral/berry-like scent. Alcohol creates for a slight butterscotch note. Aromas are fine, but don't seem to have much synergy. 9/12

APPEARANCE: Deep burgundy/mahogany hue (22-27 SRM). Very cloudy body. Moderate tan froth retains and laces well. 3/3

FLAVOR: For an IPA, this palette is remarkably malty and sweet - cloying, even. Has the trademark red malt flavor which is slightly confectionery and slightly fruity. Hops impart some citrus and berry-like flavors, though actual bitterness is rather moderate. Bourbon and barrel create for additional sweetness along with hefty alcohol presence which imparts slight butterscotch. Aftertaste is rich of malts, hops and alcohol. 12/20

MOUTHFEEL: Full-bodied; moderate carbonation. Texture is sticky and soft, although mouthfeel is comfortable. Alcohol is difficult to ignore at 12.2% ABV. Warm to be sure, though not fusel-like. Overall drinkability is pretty good. 4/5

OVERALL IMPRESSION: An interesting concept, but this would've been better in rye whiskey barrels. These flavors don't have the harmony they should. 6/10
