Sweetwater Goin' Coastal IPA

Best before date: 7/11/18

Judged to 2015 BJCP Style Guidelines for: 29A Fruit Beer (base style: 21A American IPA)

AROMA: Moderate citrus hops with fairly subtle pineapple presence. Fruit character seems authentic. Slight honey/lemon component from oxidation, though it actually works with the nose rather well. Lightly sweet pale malt presence. No alcohol, clean fermentation. 8/12

APPEARANCE: Hazy shade of deep amber (5-7 SRM). Large, tan frothy foam retains and laces well. 3/3

FLAVOR: Moderate hop presence throughout with a familiar citrusy/floral taste. Pineapple is subtle and emerges briefly on the finish. Palette is rather dry overall; nothing juicy or authentically fruity here. Malt base has slight caramel note along with a touch of honey/lemon oxidation presence. Bitterness is moderately-low for the style; this might more accurately be marketed as a pale ale. 12/20

MOUTHFEEL: Medium body; moderately-high carbonation. Smooth with a crisp finish. Not refreshing, but easy to drink. Seems a little lighter than 6.1% ABV. 3/5

OVERALL IMPRESSION: Not bad, but I don't think anything was gained by adding pineapple to this beer. Perhaps if it were fresh it'd be a different story. 5/10
